This book is full of templates and step-by-step guides to help you master the manga art style. If you follow along with each chapter and do the exercises on your own then you should see a big jump in skill. Each page is full of rich information and the print quality is superb.

This is a must-have title for anyone serious about drawing manga.

What is Kobo Super Points?

Learning how to draw in the style of Japanese manga is one thing. But the book Mastering Manga goes even further to teach the structure of manga layouts. The author Mark Crilley uses plenty of visual examples to convey each idea so you can follow along with ease. You should pick up this book once you have some basic ability to draw in the manga style. Mark does not get too deep into the art style itself.

However by practicing these exercises you should walk away with a much stronger practical understanding of manga. This book is perfect for anyone who wants to create their own graphic novels or even their own manga-style webcomic. The chapters progress slowly from faces and poses to sparkling anime eyes, crazy costumes, and wacky hair designs. If you repeat these lessons frequently enough you will see results.

Manga for the beginner Shoujo how to draw book review

Note this book is not for an absolute beginner. If you need a better place to start consider picking up The Master Guide to Drawing Anime or even consider grabbing the next book in this list. This is one of the longer books in this list with a total of pages. I will say that some of the body posing exercises can be intimidating. Over time you will develop the muscle memory to replicate these styles with ease.

And the exercises in this book can help you get there.

Mastering Manga

This book spans pages full of exercises for drawing and coloring different anime figures. Many different artists contribute to this book so you get to learn from a variety of experts. If you have no idea where to start but need an overall view of manga drawing then this book is for you.

It covers anatomy, clothing, facial expressions, and delves into color theory for styling your drawings. However I only recommend it for beginners who need an overview of the manga style.

How To Draw Shojo Manga For Amateurs

This is the most comprehensive book on the subject with over faces for you to study, clone, and restyle for yourself. This book was reviewed as different in aim and it is! It's a fascinating how-to look for people who already know how to draw manga although the book itself says it also aims at total beginners - if I were a beginner I I am no artist, I should point out, but I have always enjoyed reading those how to create manga art books, especially if they showed the experience of Original non-Japanese Manga creators.

It's a fascinating how-to look for people who already know how to draw manga although the book itself says it also aims at total beginners - if I were a beginner I would be discouraged about the amount of detailed tips in this book on how to draw for Hakusensha publications! This has the incredible advantage of having loads of artwork from Hakusensha mangaka being used as examples and getting dissected in the way they work.

We also get a view into Reiko Shimizu's studio cleaned to within an inch of its life for especially this photo-shoot I have no doubt , information on the best tools and tips how to use them, but the highlight is the use of the Ghost Only mangaka Yui Shin I quite like what I've read of that one in scanlation to illustrate the book in the guise of a noob mangaka wannabe, with a full editor-guided walk through the creation of an 18 page short story manga in a drawing style which visibly differs from her usual work!

How to Draw Shojo Manga for Amateurs (Unabridged)

Which then gets entered into two Hakusensha mangaka competitions and therefore gets critiqued by the real editors of Hana to Yume and LaLa magazine!! You get shown the character creation, the storyboard development, the full manga, and they even translated the information on how to enter those competitions even though it would be unlikely to be doable for a Western mangaka.

I wasn't bored one bit, even though I will never be able to apply any of this to my own art.

Jul 15, Filia Martin rated it it was ok Shelves: shoujo , how-to-draw. This is probably the worst how to draw book I've ever read. It expects the person who buys it to already know the basics of manga. The person is expected to know anatomy, and perspective. All it offers is a little bit of help in panel layout, and inking. It is really only helpful for those trying to become manga artists in Japan. I don't know why this was translated for US audiences-- it's of little use to us. Don't read or buy this book. Instead, pick up one of the many others that are available This is probably the worst how to draw book I've ever read.

Instead, pick up one of the many others that are available. I do NOT recommend this. May 02, Joseph dela Cruz rated it liked it. It wasn't perfect because its target audience were beginners which is completely out of the box if you start to read it. It had good illustrations which could be improved. Jun 25, Justine rated it really liked it. I may have given up on seeing any improvement in my drawing skills, but How to Draw Shojo Manga gives interesting tips on planning your story and how to handle criticisms as a storyteller and as an artist.

The head usually gets most of our attention; it tells us what the character is feeling, using a cool expression to convey cool emotion or a grin for happiness. The emotion is often in the eyes and mouth, especially when the character feels strongly about something. We will be skipping the teeth, mouth, and nose tutorials, as well as the more advanced elderly face or male face in order to focus more on the basic shougo character. This action might not be possible to undo. Are you sure you want to continue?
